Shabana Azmi on Hema Report: Women in India suppressed since 16th century, Calls for 'Arth' re-release

Shabana Azmi is a veteran actress of Hindi cinema. She has entertained the audience a lot with her brilliant acting ability. Apart from being a successful actress, she is also the wife of famous lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar. Now recently, the actress shared her views on the Justice Hema Committee report and spoke openly about the challenges faced by women. Let's tell you what she has said.

At an event, Shabana Azmi has expressed her opinion on the issue of women being constantly suppressed in India for centuries. Shabana said, "You should understand that women in India have made their journey for centuries. From the 16th to the 21st century, they have progressed, but at the same time they have been suppressed. Women in India have been a paradox of progress and suppression, just like India." The actress further said that women's stories need to be revisited. She also pointed out that one of her films, Arth, directed by Mahesh Bhatt, should be re-released today as it is still relevant and talks about the women's movement. The 1982 film depicts the struggle and independence of women.

The Hema Report was created by the Kerala government. The Justice Hema Committee was set up in 2017 in the wake of a high-profile sexual harassment case involving a leading actress. The primary purpose of its report is to investigate the working conditions, sexual harassment and gender inequality faced by Malayalam actresses. It exposed disturbing truths about the Malayalam film industry. This includes the reality that many women are forced to have sex to secure roles.

Shabana Azmi recently completed 50 years in Indian cinema. She was last seen in Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which also starred Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, and Jaya Bachchan.
