Kareena Kapoor's performance in The Buckingham Murders is her 'Career Best,' Says director Hansal Mehta

Kareena Kapoor Khan has been lauded for her role in The Buckingham Murders, a mystery-thriller directed by Hansal Mehta, which released in September 2024. Coinciding with Kareena’s 25th anniversary in the industry, the film marks what Mehta considers her finest performance yet. In a recent interview, the acclaimed filmmaker praised the actress, calling her "vastly underutilized" despite her star power.

“I’ve always felt that Kareena is a vastly underutilized actor. She’s a big star, but as an actor, there’s a lot more to her talent. There’s a huge reservoir that the world is yet to see," Mehta shared in a conversation with News 18 Showsha. He added that The Buckingham Murders is just the beginning, believing the film showcases the untapped depth of Kareena’s acting skills.

Mehta, known for his National Award-winning films, recalled that the story for The Buckingham Murders came to him in 2018 during the making of Chhalaang. Co-writer Aseem Arrora pitched the idea, and producer Ektaa Kapoor signed on Mehta to direct. By 2020, during the pandemic, a Zoom call was arranged between Kareena and the team, where the actress agreed to the project after reading a brief treatment of the film.

In the film, Kareena plays Jasmeet Bhamra, a grieving mother who relocates to a new town after the tragic loss of her son. While coping with her personal trauma, she is assigned to investigate the case of a missing boy. Her portrayal of the emotionally complex character has been widely appreciated by audiences and critics alike.

Looking ahead, Kareena will be seen in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, opposite Ajay Devgn. The highly anticipated film is set for a Diwali release, where it will compete at the box office with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, starring Kartik Aaryan, Triptii Dimri, and Vidya Balan.
