Not just a title, but the film Uchaai, like its name, brought a new high in the life of director Sooraj Barjatya and this unmatched talent of Indian cinema getting a National Award for his amazing offering is indeed a proud moment for the Indian industry. Yes, at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony in New Delhi, Sooraj Barjatya and Neena Gupta accepted their National Awards from the hands of President Draupadi Murmu, which will be one of the most memorable moments of their lives.
Iconic filmmaker Barjatya, known for his tales of grand family relationships, has won the prestigious National Award for Best Director for the film Uchaai. Produced by Rajshri Productions in association with Mahaveer Jain Films and Boundless Media, the film has been praised for its emotional depth and breathtaking visuals. Along with Barjatya's win, Uchaai also brought recognition to veteran actress Neena Gupta, who won her second National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film.
Reflecting on his journey with Uchhai, Sooraj Barjatya said, “Uchhai was not the kind of film people expected from me. It did not have the grandeur of my previous works, but the subject came from my heart. I did not choose Uchhai; it chose me. Today, this award is the perfect culmination of that journey.”
Rajshri Productions’ 60th film Uchhai was conceptualised and shot during the pandemic, a time of uncertainty for filmmakers and audiences. The film tells a touching story of friendship, hope and resilience in relationships, shot against the backdrop of the Himalayas. It was the first Hindi film to be shot at the Everest Base Camp, which is more than 17,000 feet above sea level, making it both a physical and creative challenge for the entire cast and crew.
Recalling the risks involved in shooting in such extreme conditions, Barjatya said, “This film took me to new heights, both literally and creatively.” The film's emotional resonance and stunning visuals connect deeply with the audience and prove once again that a great story can transcend conventional filmmaking expectations."
Thirty years after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun won the National Award for Best Popular Film, Sooraj Barjatya stood on the prestigious stage once again, this time with the Best Director award in his hand. "At that time, as a young director, there was a wave of excitement. Today, the feeling is one of deep gratitude and peace," says Sooraj. He dedicated the award to Rajshri Productions, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and to the mentors who helped shape his career, including talented personalities like Mr. Mahesh Bhatt, Mr. N. Chandra and Mr. Hiren Nag.
Apart from Sooraj Barjatya's win, Ouch earned Neena Gupta her second National Award for Best Supporting Actress. The portrayal of Shabina Siddiqui gave an emotional richness and depth to Neena Gupta's acting prowess that was appreciated by critics and audiences alike. Neena Gupta's performance in Uchi is a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication. "Neena Gupta's win is well-deserved and this recognition adds to the joy of our hearts," said Sooraj.
