Zindaginama review: Ambitious yet underwhelming in addressing mental health issues

Web Series: Zindaginama
Cast: Priya Bapat, Shruti Seth, Shweta Basu Prasad, Shreyas Talpade, Prajakta Koli, and Yashaswini Dayama
Director: Multiple directors
Rating: 2 Moons

On Mental Health Day, SonyLiv released an anthology web series Zindaginama. The six-episodic series is centered around mental illness but it is just another project on the subject. The anthology tried to tackle crucial mental health issues but ultimately it failed to deliver an impactful experience. Applause Entertainment presents Zindaginama, An AntiMatter production, Conceptualised by Mpower stars Priya Bapat, Shruti Seth, Shweta Basu Prasad, Shreyas Talpade, Prajakta Koli, and Yashaswini Dayama among others.

The six-episode series attempted to explore conditions like schizophrenia, OCD, gaming addictions, anorexia nervosa, PTSD, and gender dysphoria. Despite some significant subjects, the narrative lacks depth. The episode titled Purple Duniya is difficult to connect with the protagonists’s struggles due to the unfocused narrative. Shreyas Talpade and Shweta Basu Prasad’s commendable acting struggles with uneven writing.

Caged and other episodes are predictable while others like The Daily Puppet Show detract from character authenticity. While the anthology series Zindaginama seeks to raise awareness about mental health it is trapped into oversimplifying complex issues, glossing over the intricacies of conditions in favor of a surface-level approach. The series does highlight the social stigma surrounding mental health, but it struggles to provide fresh insights or genuine resonance.

Overall, Zindaginama made an effort to bring mental health topics to highlight but couldn’t thrive. It took a courageous episode of action to shed light on mental health. Its execution is less desired making it more of a missed opportunity.
