Anees Bazmee recalls getting hospitalized due to stress after Welcome trial screening; here’s why

Anees Bazmee is known for some commendable comedy movies like Hulchul, No Entry, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and more. Welcome was also his project which performed well at the box office but during screen trials, people didn’t find any laugh. While he was confident about the project he was told that the film isn’t funny. The filmmaker was hospitalized after he got stressed when people didn’t like Welcome.

However, Anees went with his conviction and released the movie as it is. Well, Welcome is considered a classic comedy film. Even after 17 years of release, people laugh their hearts out and call it a cult. The movie starred Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, and Feroz Khan among other stellar cast.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Anees Bazmee said, "When I made Welcome, people had just one complaint - that this isn't comedy. Full trial runs of Welcome had not a single person laughing in the theatre. But when the film was released, people called it cult. Today, after 16-17 years of its release, people still call it relevant and make memes on it. So we must have done something right."

He further added, "I was in a hospital. When a hundred people don't like your film, you get stressed. I make one film at a time and that project becomes my battle. Today, I am at a stage where I can afford to have the one odd bad film, because I have a body of work behind me. At that time, I didn't. On top of that, there were so many people linked to the film, including the financiers. So I was very stressed. On the hospital bed, I reviewed my script, scene-by-scene. At the end of two days, I came to the conclusion that this works. My conviction said this is something very nice."

Anees Bazmee is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. He extended the film franchise of the OG 2007 Bhool Bhuliaiyaa starring Akshay Kumar. After the success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, third chapter of the horror comedy series is slated to release on November 1. The new installment stars Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Triptii Dimri, and Madhuri Dixit among the stellar ensemble supporting cast. Directed by Anees Bazmee the film is produced by T-Series Films and Cine1 Studios.
