Peeping Moon Exclusive : Nawazuddin Siddiqui to headline Disney+ Hotstar’s adaptation of American medical drama series ‘House’

Nawazuddin Siddiqui was among Bollywood’s first actors to embrace the burgeoning world of OTT when streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video began expanding their footprint in India. The ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ actor starred alongside Saif Ali Khan in Netflix’s maiden Indian web series ‘Sacred Games’ which marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of Indian OTT content, fundamentally reshaping the entertainment landscape.

Now, six years after the massive global success of ‘Sacred Games’, Nawazuddin is set to return to long-form storytelling with another high-profile web series. PeepingMoon.com has exclusively learned that he will headline Disney+ Hotstar’s Indian adaptation of the iconic American medical drama series, ‘House’. Banijay Asia is producing this show, while screenwriter-turned-filmmaker Vijay Maurya has been tapped to direct it. The project is currently in pre-production and will get off the ground in mid-2025.

Nawazuddin will play a brilliant yet unconventional medical genius in this yet-untitled show, taking over the role originally immortalized by Hugh Laurie (‘The Night Manager’, ‘Tehran’, ‘Chance’) in the US version. The original show, created by David Shore, aired for eight seasons from 2004 to 2012 and followed the life of Dr. Gregory House, a misanthropic, cynical medical genius who, despite his dependence on pain medication, successfully leads a team of diagnosticians at a prestigious hospital.

Vijay Maurya, who previously penned films like ‘Gully Boy’, ‘Toofaan’, ‘Darlings’, and ‘Agni’, has brilliantly adapted the series for an Indian context. Nawazuddin was thrilled by the script and immediately came aboard, marking his return to web series after a six-year hiatus. He will embody an antisocial, maverick doctor specializing in diagnostic medicine who stops at nothing to solve puzzling medical cases.

‘House’ marks Banijay Asia’s fourth collaboration with Disney+ Hotstar on international series adaptations. They have previously collaborated on the Emmy-nominated ‘The Night Manager’ and Kajol starrer ‘The Trial’, adapted from the American legal drama ‘The Good Wife’. Additionally, they are also working on the Indian version of the detective series ‘Monk’, which is currently in production and aiming for a late 2025 premiere.

Meanwhile, Nawazuddin also has several films lined up. He's currently shooting for Netflix India's ‘Raat Akeli Hai 2’ with Chitrangda Singh and Radhika Apte and has finished filming for Maddock Film’s ‘Thama’” co-starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. The slate also includes three more films, such as the romantic comedy ‘Bole Chudiyaan’ and ‘Noorani Chehra’, and Bhavesh Mandalia’s ‘Lion King’.
