Sanam Teri Kasam sequel rights controversy: Producer Deepak Mukut clarifies directors do not have the authority to announce

The 2016 romantic drama film 'Sanam Teri Kasam' is getting a lot of appreciation after its recent re-release. The film's directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru recently announced its sequel, which created a stir among the fans. But now the producer of the film has given his opinion about this and said that the director does not have the right to announce the sequel.

The film's producer Deepak Mukut told Bollywood Hungama that he has the rights of this film because he is its producer. He said, "I have the IP (intellectual property) of Sanam Teri Kasam, because I am its producer, so I also have the rights to make a sequel, prequel or remake. Actually, I had announced the sequel in September 2024, which will star Harshvardhan Rane. As far as directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru are concerned, I have not discussed anything with them about this. They have not met me nor talked to me about this. I have not finalized any director yet."

When Deepak was asked if he had approached Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, he said, "It is their duty to approach me and not mine. Especially when they are giving interviews about making the sequel. I just want to reiterate that the rights are with me." Talking about the sequel, he said that the writing work is going on and as soon as it is completed, the shooting of the film will start. Notably, recently Harshvardhan Rane had also said that he will drink only water for the next 11 days for the sequel.

'Sanam Teri Kasam' was first released in 2016. Made on a budget of 14 crore, the film did not receive a great response from the audience and it could only earn 9.1 crore at the box office, after which it was declared a commercial flop. The film gave entry to Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hussain in Bollywood. It is a heart-touching love story, which has a tragic end. The film was re-released on 7 February and has now crossed the 30 crore mark.
