This controversy started when Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, who is the president of All India Muslim Jamaat, called Mohammed Shami a criminal for not fasting in Ramadan. Maulana said, "Shami has committed a crime by not fasting. He should not have done this. In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal and he will have to answer for this to God."

Maulana further said, "Fasting is a responsibility, which is mandatory for every healthy person. If a healthy man or woman does not fast, then he is a criminal. Mohammad Shami consumed water or any other drink during the match. People were watching him. If Shami was playing the match, it means that he was healthy. Despite this, he did not fast and drank water. This will send a wrong message."
