Madras High Court extends interim protection for Kunal Kamra till April 17 in controversial remarks case

The Madras High Court on Monday, April 7, 2025 extended the interim protection from arrest order to famous stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra till April 17. The protection pertains to a case registered against him at the Khar police station in Mumbai. Kamra is accused of making objectionable remarks against a Maharashtra politician in his recent comedy show 'Naya Bharat'.

Justice Sundar Mohan passed the order after advocate V. Suresh told the court that he had sent a personal notice to the Khar police on March 28, 2025 as per the court's order. Suresh also requested the court to ensure from the registry that the court's notice was also sent to the police. The court ordered the case to be re-listed for April 17.

During the hearing on Monday, advocate V. Suresh informed that three more FIRs have been registered against his client in Maharashtra. Apart from this, the police raided his parents' house in Mumbai, while Kunal Kamra has been living in Viluppuram district of Tamil Nadu since 2021. He also said that the police also summoned the audience of the show for questioning.

The court has fixed the next hearing of the case for April 17. Kunal Kamra was recently summoned twice by the Mumbai Police, and his controversy escalated over his parody song on Eknath Shinde. After this show at Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, Shiv Sena supporters protested fiercely and vandalized the club and hotel. Discussions are still going on about this matter, and the next court hearing in the legal action against Kamra will be on April 17.
