Bombay High Court issues notice to Mumbai Police and Shiv Sena MLA in Kunal Kamra case

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday (April 8, 2025) issued notice to Mumbai Police and Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel while hearing the petition of stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra. Kunal Kamra has challenged the FIR in which he has been accused of making alleged objectionable remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Last month, Khar police registered an FIR against Kunal Kamra on the complaint of Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel. The FIR was registered under sections 353(1)(b) and 356(2) of the Indian Penal Code. Kunal, in one of his comedy shows, took a dig at Eknath Shinde and mocked his rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray in 2022. Apart from this, he also did a funny adaptation of a song from the film 'Dil To Pagal Hai' against Shinde.

Kunal was summoned by the police for questioning three times, but he did not appear. On this, a bench of Justice Sarang Kotwal and SM Modak fixed the hearing of the case for April 16.

Kunal's lawyer Navroz Sivai told the court that Kunal has been living in Tamil Nadu since 2021 and he had proposed to the police to record his statement three times through video conferencing, as he felt his life was in danger. He also said, "The police are more adamant on bringing him to Mumbai, rather than recording his statement. This is not a case of murder, it is just a case of a comedy show." The lawyer also informed that the Madras High Court has granted transit bail to Kunal till April 17.

Kunal Kamra is accused of making fun of Eknath Shinde and his rebellion in his show, after which an FIR was registered. Now it remains to be seen what decision the High Court gives in this matter on April 16.
