The South Cyber Branch of Mumbai Police has got an important success in the online piracy case of the film 'Chhaava'. In this case, the police have arrested a 26-year-old youth from Daund taluka of Pune district, who was illegally uploading the film on the Internet.
This film starring Vicky Kaushal was released on 14 February 2025 and soon after its release, its pirated versions started going viral on the Internet. The producers suffered huge financial losses due to this illegal broadcast. Rajat Rahul Haksar, CEO of Agastya Entertainment Company, had lodged a complaint with the cyber police in this regard. According to the complaint, between February 14 and March 20, 1818 illegal links of the film were shared on social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, YouTube and Google.
During the investigation, the police found that a website and mobile app were used behind these illegal links, which were being operated by Sagar Manik Randhawan, a resident of Daund taluka of Pune. He used to buy a domain from 'Hostinger' and upload newly released films on it and then used the app to provide the facility of downloading the films by taking money from people. On April 10, South Cyber Police arrested the accused with the help of Daund Police and brought him to Mumbai and presented him in the Holiday Court. The court has sent the accused to police custody till April 13, 2025. The police are now trying to find out who else is involved in this racket.
In this case, a case has been registered against the accused under Sections 316 (2) and 318 (3) of the Indian Penal Code, Sections 51, 63 and 65 (A) of the Copyright Act, Sections 6AA and 6AB of the Cinematograph Act, and Sections 66 and 63 (J) of the IT Act. All these sections provide for strict action on serious crimes like piracy.
