If all goes well, legendary Bollywood composer-singer R D Burman fondly addressed as Pancham-Da, who passed away in 1994 is expected to be conferred ‘posthumously’ with the prestigious ‘Padma’ civilian honour, according to rhythm-maestro-cum-impresario Nitin Shankar who announced this in the presence of State Cabinet Minister Ashish Shelar.

Shankar revealed, “The application for the honour to be conferred on Pancham-da has been made, with a recommendation by our State CM Devendra Fadnavis and now the decision of the Padma Awards Committee is awaited.”

The occasion was the ‘Love You Pancham’ houseful concert convened by Jyoti and Nitin Shankar (of ‘Red Diamonds’)  to mark R D Burman’s 80th birth anniversary and also to raise charity funds for musicians in distress. Held in the presence of  ‘guest of honour’ Asha Bhosle and celebs like Anup Jalota and composer Lalit at Shanmukhananda Hall last night, the event took a historic twist. That was when Asha Bhosle declined to sing on stage, as she said she had come ‘mainly to publicly share a few nostalgic moments of her association with RDB. Taking this cue,  Nitin and the exuberant compere RJ Anmol, insisted on a role-reversal, following which the entire audience was asked to ‘hum’ the evergreen RDB composed Asha song ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne’ with Madame Bhosle raptly ‘listening’ to the mega-chorus.

Sharing her sentiments, the outspoken Bhosle said, “ Honestly, I feel that genius Pancham possibly never realized during his lifetime how ‘great’ a composer he was. Today, even after 25 years, thousands of artistes are earning their livelihood performing RDB’s timeless songs. Like the Pancham-Sur, RD will always be unshakeable and live in our hearts forever,” she signed off.
