It’s amazing how everyone, but everyone, is talking about Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next film after he shelved In-sha-allah with Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt but the reticent filmmaker himself. The latest goss is that SLB is making his long-planned biopic Gangubai Kothewali on the legendary brothel madam who changed the face of Mumbai’s red-light area Kamathipura. And, because he already has Alia’s dates leftover from In-sha-allah, SLB is casting her in the film. What’s more is that he also wants Ranbir Kapoor to play a small but important role in the biopic.
Media stories quoting “sources” from Gangubai Kothewali that is nowhere near going on the floor yet say that SLB was initially making the film with Priyanka Chopra and it was called Heera Mandi then. They also claim SLB will begin shooting the biopic next month with Alia and that he and Ranbir have ironed out whatever differences they had and the filmmaker is just waiting for the actor to sign the film. It sounds meaty and good, of course, but PeepingMoon.com sources from the same side of the Gangubai Kothewali camp say it is utter nonsense that Ranbir has been approached for the film and SLB is waiting for his okay.
Yes, the rumours that said SLB was keen to roll Gangubai Kothewali in October also added that while no release date for the film had been decided the pre-production on the biopic has already started. Wonder what the poor filmmaker must think of all these stories floating around. Guess he’ll come out with the truth when he’s ready or when he’s provoked – as he was with In-sha-allah after Salman went on social media to say the film had been postponed.
