PeepingMoon Exclusive: John Abraham to play the vigilante superhero in Sanjay Gupta's 'Rakshak'

The Coronavirus pandemic is not stopping Sanjay Gupta! The filmmaker is utilizing the lockdown by working on his forthcoming projects and has already completed the scripting for the third installment of his Shootout series that will go on floors right after his much-awaited Mumbai Saga. While the casting for Shootout 3 will begin soon, we heard the director has already locked the main lead for his most ambitious superhero project, Rakshak that he announced earlier this year.

Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Sanjay Gupta has found his vigilante superhero in Bollywood's hulk John Abraham. The actor who's also starring in Gupta's next multi-starrer gangster drama has apparently agreed to play the lead in his adaptation of Shamik Dasgupta's graphic novel, Rakshak: A Hero Within Us— a dark, cerebral, yet elevating tale of one man who decides to stand up and fight injustice and crime.

According to sources close to the development, John was the first and only choice since its inception as it was he who suggested the idea of making Rakshak as a major motion picture to Gupta. The filmmaker is currently developing the script with the author and Chetan Naidu keeping John in mind and has planned to mount it by the next year-end. He has asked the Parmanu actor to finish all his film commitments before they dive strictly into their ambitious, big-budget project.

Billed as India's first graphic novel to be made into a massive feature, Rakshak follows the story of Captain Aditya Shergill, an ex-Indian army marine commando, who after losing a limb serving his country and having seen the worst in humanity, wants nothing but to settle down with his family. However, following a horrible incident that shatters his family, he is forced to take the law in his own hands and take up the responsibility to protect the weak and defenseless. The film will be produced by Sanjay Gupta and co-produced by Yali Dream Creations' Asvin Srivatsangam along with Vivek Rangachari.
