There is good news for all fans of Sanjay Leela Bhansali outside India. The celebrated filmmaker’s Padmavati will have one of the biggest worldwide premieres for a Bollywood film ever. And all because Paramount Pictures of Hollywood, which was earlier reluctant to distribute Padmavati, is now super excited to do so because its executives saw the trailer of the period drama and reportedly were floored by Bhansali’s magic.
The story goes that Bhansali, who is confident that Padmavati is going to be the next big thing in the world of entertainment, was always keen on a big premiere and release for his magnum opus. But the Hollywood studio was initially skeptical and is said to have turned Bhansali down because it felt Padmavati was a high risk. All that changed once Paramount saw the exciting trailer Bhansali made for Padmavati. A meeting between the Hollywood company and Bollywood filmmaker was soon organized and the outcome is that Padmavati will now hit a great number of screens worldwide.
What is said to have zapped the Hollywood studio executives is the sheer magnificence of Padmavati in terms of its sets and costumes. Now talks are on to take the film to Paris and other European cities, especially in Sweden, where the cinema going audiences lap up Bollywood films. Parisians, in particular, will be looking forward to Padmavati. That’s because Bhansali showcased it there as a grand opera on stage in 2008.
The initial plan was to screen Padmavati in Paris dubbed in French. Which was a no-no from Bhansali’s point of view because that would destroy the flow of the film. Now it will have French sub-titles. The last big Bollywood release in the French capital known to be a global hub for art, fashion, films and food was Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas in 2002. What’s being planned for Padmavati will reportedly make Devdas pale in comparison.
The actor who will be most excited by this news is Ranveer Singh who plays Allaudin Khilji in Padmavati. Ranveer’s last film, YRF’s Befikre with Vaani Kapoor, was extensively shot in France and its trailer was launched at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The flamboyant actor is said to be very much at home in the city and is a big favourite of all Parisians.
