Even without Shashi, the show must go on feel the Kapoor khandan

There’s one reason why Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan are cutting short their Pataudi vacation meant for son Taimur’s first birthday party on Wednesday and returning to Mumbai over the weekend. The couple is coming in honour of Shashi Kapoor who passed away on December 4. As the phrase in show business says, “The show must go on!” And the show, in this case, is the Christmas brunch and high tea that was traditionally held for years at Shashi Kapoor’s Juhu residence to which every member of the Kapoor family came. The large and extended family, which is notoriously rambunctious, spends a lovely afternoon bonding over a sumptuous spread. After which they gather around the dining table for a family picture that last year Neetu Kapoor shared on social media. After this Christmas brunch, Kareena and Saif and Taimur leave for London and then Switzerland on their vacation.

The Kapoor family Christmas brunch is a tradition that’s been going on for years. It was started by Shashi Kapoor’s English wife Jennifer Kendal when the Kapoors meant Raj, Shammi and Shashi and their wives and children. When Jennifer passed away to cancer in 1984, Shashi Kapoor continued hosting the Christmas brunch at his residence to reunite the entire Kapoor family under one roof on that day. Now it’s an occasion when every Kapoor takes time off from their busy schedule in order to attend the brunch and continue the family tradition. And with Shashi Kapoor no more there to do the honours this year and sit grandly at the head of the dining table, his elder son Kunal Kapoor has taken it upon himself to host the family brunch this Christmas. It is said to be an elaborate meal of traditional roast dishes and Mughlai food to which everyone looks forward. For the 2015 Kapoor Christmas brunch, Ranbir Kapoor brought Katrina Kaif and she was made most welcome into the family.
