PeepingMoon Exclusive: Aamir Khan backs out of Vikram Vedha remake; to start Mogul next

Neeraj Pandey's Vikram Vedha remake has been hanging in the balance without a major development since its announcement. The project was earlier rumoured to star Shah Rukh Khan but things apparently didn't work out after the superstar asked to replace the director duo Pushkar and Gayathri who was assigned to helm it. The film came back into the limelight last year when Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan reportedly agreed to play the lead. They verbally greenlighted the suspense thriller and were supposed to start shooting from March this year. However, the plan hit a six after the deadly Coronavirus pandemic put the entire world to a screeching halt.

Now, Peepingmon.com has learned that Vikram Vedha might not get into production anytime soon. Sources close to the project have informed us that Aamir Khan has backed out of the film bringing uncertainty to its future. He is said to have left the film because its script didn't satisfy him. The superstar, as per sources, wanted the remake to be top-notch with its own flavour but the final screenplay was comparatively disappointing.

The neo-noir crime thriller inspired by the folk tale of Raja Vikramaditya and the spirit Betaal was supposed to bring Aamir and Saif together 19 years after the Farhan Akhtar rom-com, Dil Chahta Hai. Aamir was believed to be playing the role of a most-wanted gangster that was originally portrayed by Vijay Sethupathi while Saif was to reprise R Madhavan's role as a righteous police officer. Although Saif is still said to be associated with the project it's yet unclear when it will get off the ground after Aamir's exit.

Aamir, meanwhile, is currently busy with his 2021 Christmas offering Laal Singh Chaddha, an official adaptation of Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump (1994). He is expected to complete that film by February after which he will dive deep into the preparations for music baron Gulshan Kumar's biopic, Mogul. The Subhash Kapoor directorial is scheduled to go on floors mid-next year!
