Guess who’s coming for dinner to Karan Johar’s house tonight? The famous Hollywood filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, that’s who! Like Karan, Darren’s a director, producer and writer. He loves to make melodramatic, surreal and often disturbing films. Remember the much-talked-about psychological horror film Mother! last year in which Jennifer Lawrence starred with Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer? That’s Darren’s.
Before that, he made Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Aftermath, Russell Crowe’s Noah, Mark Wahlberg’s The Fighter, Mickey Rourke’s The Wrestler, Natalie Portman’s Black Swan – another psychological horror film co-starring actresses Mila Kunis and Winona Ryder, the biographical drama Jackie with Natalie (again) starring as Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of assassinated US President JFK. Not forgetting his directorial debut Pi of 1998, a psychological thriller, for which Darren received the Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival that year.

Darren is in Mumbai for a master class at the ongoing 20th Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) Film Festival with festival director Anupama Chopra. He said he had heard MAMI (which ends tomorrow) was a world class event and he could not wait to be a part of it. “I have enjoyed India as a tourist many times in the past,” said Darren in a statement, adding he had been looking forward to filling his eyes, ears and all his senses with the beauty of Mumbai. Last year, MAMI featured his film Mother!

Co-hosting dinner for Darren along with Karan Johar will be Anupama Chopra herself, and MAMI chairperson and board member Kiran Rao and Zoya Akhtar respectively. Apart from cinema, for which they have a mutual fascination, the Bollywood biggies will be able to talk to the Hollywood filmmaker about his celebrated relationships with actresses Rachel Weisz (with whom he has a 12-year-old son) and Jennifer Lawrence whom he met during the making of Mother! They ended their relationship earlier this year but Jennifer, 27, admitted she still held a flame for her ex and still loved Darren, 49, very much.
