Exclusive: Sanjay Leela Bhansali to launch niece Sharmin in a Tamil musical romance remake?

Buzz is that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is launching his niece Sharmin Segal (sister Bela Bhansali Segal’s daughter) and comedian Jaaved Jaaferi’s son Mizaan Jaaferi in his next production that will be a musical romance. The film is believed to be titled Malaal and will be directed by National Award winner Mangesh Hadawale who helmed the unreleased Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Dekh Indian Circus.

Till now, the subject of Malaal was under wraps. Now, sources tell PeepingMoon.com that the film is reportedly a remake of the 2004 Tamil hit romantic drama 7G Rainbow Colony that had 10 songs. Director Mangesh has apparently rewritten the script to make it work in Hindi for Bollywood audiences. “The film is not expected to be a fantasy with stunning visuals and intense characters like Bhansali’s earlier productions. It’s a simple and pure story about middle-class life and the impact of first love that goes beyond the boy-meets-girl routine,” the source added.

Over 50 per cent of the film has already been completed in shoots in Mumbai. The source said SLB wants to give Sharmin and Mizaan a perfect debut and hence he is overseeing the shooting and edit himself. He is planning to release Malaal in April or May so that he gets out of this responsibility and can focus on his next directorial that he hopes to begin in the second half of the year.

7G Rainbow Colony revolved around Kadhir, a good-for-nothing, lower-middle-class South Indian boy who lives with his family in 7G Rainbow Colony. When a North Indian girl Anitha moves to his neighborhood, he falls head over heels in love with her, but she keeps rejecting his advances. The film starred Ravi Krishna and Sonia Agarwal in the lead and was a big commercial success.

Right after the original’s release, Vivek Oberoi was signed for its Hindi remake and Mani Ratnam was supposed to direct it, but that film went into cold storage after the filmmaker left the project. A few years later, Vivek bought its remake rights and was supposed to act in and produce the film, but that project too never saw the light of day.
