You would be forgiven for mistaking the Mumbai Police’s annual cultural festival 'Umang' being held at the MMRDA Grounds, BKC, tonight for a Bollywood supercop event. Thanks to the high-adrenaline stunt performed by superstar Akshay Kumar followed by an entertaining conversation on stage between him and Bollywood’s supercop universe creator Rohit Shetty along with the filmmaker’s iconic screen law enforcers Ajay Devgn (Singham) and Ranveer Singh (Simmba). Here’s what you missed.
Akshay, who is going to play Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Veer Sooryavanshi in Rohit’s next supercop film Sooryavanshi, pulled off a breathtaking dive from the 12th storey of a building at the MMRDA Grounds that was illuminated in saffron, white and green. The actor was dressed in the khaki uniform of his screen character 'Sooryavanshi'. Even as Akshay gracefully sailed down, the national tricolour was seen going up in the august presence of state dignitaries including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. When Akshay’s feet hit the ground and the families of the assembled policemen broke into thunderous applause, the national anthem began playing for the 70th Republic Day.

That was not all. No sooner than Jana Gana Mana came to a soul stirring finish, than Akshay still in his 'Sooryavanshi' avatar put on a police helmet and leaped onto his powerful motorcycle. The actor then led a team of 20 Mumbai Police officers including women on their glittering motorcycles through the MMRDA Grounds. Without stopping, Akshay rode his bike onto the stage and joined Rohit. The two then engaged in a spirited conversation about cops and Bollywood films that had the rank and file of the Mumbai Police including Police Commissioner Subodh Jaiswal delightfully entertained.

That was still not all. Rohit pulled another surprise by inviting Ajay 'Singham' Devgn to continue the chat with Akshay and him. And just when the audience was beginning to think this could not get any bigger or better, Ranveer 'Simmba' Singh leaped to his feet energetically from the front row and ran onto the stage to join 'Sooryavanshi' and 'Singham'. That’s when the audience gave the filmmaker and his actors a thunderous applause that could be heard in Juhu! The highlight of Umang 2019 was the generous cheque of Rs. 51 lakh that was presented to the Mumbai Police from the profits of Simmba for the welfare of its officers and men and especially the families of those who were martyred in action.
