PeepingMoon Exclusive: ‘With any kind of freedom comes responsibility,’ say Shefali Shah and Soni Razdan on OTT coming under censorship

Shefali Shah, Soni Razdan, Kirti Kulhari, Masaba Gupta and Rasika Dugal recently came together for Netflix’s Now-Streeming annual junket. The actresses voiced their opinions on the OTT censorship, and the theatre vs digital debate while speaking to PeepingMoon.com during the roundtable.

When asked about the ongoing discussion of OTT being brought under some sort of censorship, Shefali said that it was necessary as freedom comes with responsibility for everyone- makers, actors and the audience. She said, “You cannot tell an audience what to watch or what not to watch they will figure a way to watch it. However, with any kind of freedom comes responsibility so it is as much a makers, actors and platforms responsibility it is audience’s responsibility as well. There has been parental guidance and 18+ content so the responsibility is shared and cannot only be put on the makers. There is beauty in art but it should not offend or hurt anyone. But as an audience you have to understand that it’s fictional.”

Soni also gave her viewpoint and lent her support to some sort of censorship. She said, “There is no absolute freedom and we have had freedom to express. But right now things seem to be okay and we do not seem to be any danger to restrict creative freedom. It is just to be more responsible as makers.”
