PeepingMoon Stars Unplugged: Lost good roles to popular actors initially, would wonder why newcomers don't get enough chance- Vijayendra Kumeria

Being an actor is no mean feat, especially when you decide to brave the odds of the glamour world all by yourself. In PeepingMoon's latest series, titled Stars Unplugged, popular actors and actresses will talk about their experiences of making it big, gaining popularity with their body of work and the challenges they faced on their way to success.

The sixth episode of Stars Unplugged features Vijayendra Kumeria. He first appeared in the show Chotti Bahu in 2011 and went on to star in Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara PyaaraUdaan, Sufiyana Pyaar Mera and Naagin 4 among many others. Talking to PeepingMoon, the actor spoke about dealing with initial rejections, surviving cutthroat competition for 10 years and why it is important to be an actor before experiencing superstardom.

Excerpts from the interview:

Was it difficult to establish an identity in the industry?

When you start working, you do face certain challenges. Even I did. I gave multiple auditions for roles I wanted to do but wasn’t getting those. Slowly and gradually things started to fall in place.

How difficult was it to bag your first show?

Before starting my career in the television industry, I had done some other work too. When I decided to try TV, I got my first role within 3 months.

When did the acting bug bite you?

I was always more inclined towards acting and dramatics since my school and college days. Before stepping into this profession, I worked as a cabin crew for 5 years but the thought of becoming an actor never left me. While making the shift, I thought if nothing works out, I would go back to my previous job.

When you decided to become an actor, did your family members object?

No, my family has been very supportive. Yes, my mother was concerned and wasn't sure whether I was taking the right decision.

How was it to survive the cutthroat competition?

It is tough but I don't believe in competing with my contemporaries. Everyone is different and cannot be compared. You have to compete with yourself. My only aim is to make sure all my characters are unique and different.

Did you lose out on any project due to a lack of experience initially?

I did lose out on certain projects because they were looking out for known and experienced actors.

Did rejection affect you?

Yes, it did affect me. I would wonder why aren’t producers giving a chance to newcomers. At the same time, I understand why that happens. Naturally, producers look for popular actors who enjoy a strong fan following and fit the role perfectly.

What’s more important-being an actor or stardom?

Being an actor. If you are a good actor, stardom follows.
