PeepingMoon Exclusive: Karan Johar-Guneet Monga making high concept action thriller with Lakshya Lalwani and Tanya Maniktala

Filmmakers Karan Johar and Guneet Monga are teaming up again, nine years after the Cannes sensation – The Lunchbox. PeepingMoon.com has exclusively learned that the two esteemed Bollywood producers are now collaborating on an action-thriller film titled Aaghat. The film will star Dharma talent Lakshya Lalwani and A Suitable Boy actress Tanya Maniktala in the lead roles and will be directed by Nikhil Bhat, who has previously helmed films like Brij Mohan Amar Rahe, and Hurdang. This is going to be a high concept action film for which the filmmakers have brought it a team of specialists from Korea that has been working tirelessly to achieve the action brilliance expected of Aaghat. Also, for the first time Dharma is positioning Lakshya strongly in the action domain and insiders say that he has not let down KJo’s banner and, in fact, has done a phenomenal job.

“After the critical success of The Lunchbox at various international film festivals worldwide, Karan Johar and Guneet Monga announced one more film together in 2014. They were supposed to remake the French comedy, The Intouchables, for Indian audiences, with Mohit Suri on board to direct. However, the film was soon put on the backburner after they learned that Telugu filmmaker Vamshi Paidipally was already remaking this film with Nagarjuna, Karthi, and Tamannnah Bhatia. Post the prorogation of the French film remake, Karan and Guneet have discussed many projects to collaborate on, but they just didn’t work out, until very recently when they came across this great script, titled Aaghat. “It’s an unique and entertaining action thriller that will definitely stand out with its gripping storyline,” a source close to the development informed us.

Aaghat has already gone on floors in Mumbai and will be wrapped up by July-end to be readied for a late 2022 release. Dharma Productions’ home-grown talent, Lakshya, will be seen in this film exploring a world diametrically opposite to what he’s playing in his upcoming big Bollywood debut, Bedhadak, directed by Shashank Khaitan. Tanya Maniktala, who’s impressed audiences and critics alike with her performances in A Suitable Boy, Chutzpah, and Feels Like Ishq, meanwhile, plays a strong-willed woman in this medium-budget flick, produced under the banners of Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment. The film also marks Tanya’s first non-multi-starrer, and will be her third upcoming release after Santosh Sivan’s action-thriller, Mumbaikar, and the Amazon Prime investigative drama series, PI Meena, both slated to come out in the third quarter of this year.
