PeepingMoon Exclusive: Atul Kulkarni calls Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor's Laal Singh Chaddha a 'desi adaptation' of Forrest Gump, says 'one should watch how it's adapted to Indian sensibilities'

Tom Hanks' acclaimed film, Forrest Gump, is getting its official Hindi remake. Titled Laal Singh Chaddha, the film stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, Naga Chaitanya, Manav Vij and others. It is directed by Advait Chandan and Atul Kulkarni adapted Forrest Gump to suit Indian sensibilities. As Laal Singh Chaddha is releasing in theatres on August 11, PeepingMoon.com spoke to Atul about the film.

Talking about Laal Singh Chaddha, Atul, the writer of the film, said it is not a remake of Forrest Gump but an adaptation. "Laal Singh Chaddha is an adaptation and not a remake. It is a completely desi film. One needs to see how it is adapted to the Indian audience's sensibilities," Atul told.

An actor himself, Atul turned writer for Laal Singh Chaddha. Calling himself an expresser instead of a writer, he said, "I don’t call myself a writer; I am an expresser. I wrote Laal Singh Chaddha 14 years ago and after that, I haven’t written anything. I don’t know whether it is a debut or when will I write next." When asked about Shah Rukh Khan's cameo in the film, Atul refused to delve into the details and said, I cannot say anything about that right now."

Post the pandemic, the box office success of a film cannot be predicted. While big and hyped films are failing to deliver, some mid-budget and smaller films are working wonders. Talking about the trade aspect and his expectation from Laal Singh Chaddha, Atul shared, "I am not a trade expert. All I know is Laal Singh Chaddha is a very special film and will touch the hearts of Indians irrespective of geographical boundaries, age group, gender etc."
