Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg’s ambitious biopic on the legendary Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly is progressing well. PeepingMoon.com has exclusively learned that Ayushmann Khurrana has now been formally signed to headline this sports biopic, with Vikramaditya Motwane directing, making it one of the most exciting Hindi projects in development.
“Producers Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg, who are producing this film under their Luv Films banner, have hit a six by bringing together Ayushmann Khurrana and Vikramaditya Motwane. Both have established themselves as formidable forces with an incredible body of work throughout the years.
Ayushmann, also a left-handed batsman like Ganguly, is a perfect fit for his biopic, while Motwane has already proven his mastery with films such as Udaan, Lootera, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, and Jubilee. Stakeholders are fired up and gung-ho about the kind of cinematic masterpiece they are set to create together. The film will officially be announced soon,” a source familiar with the development told us.
Ayushmann has been in discussion for this film since last year and was the producer’s ideal choice from the beginning. He was formally signed just recently after all the formalities were completed, and he will soon begin his preparation for the role. Ayushmann is supposed to undergo months of intense cricket training before starting the shoot. The shooting timeline hasn’t been locked yet, but we understand it goes on floors in the second half of 2024.
For those unaware, Vikramaditya Motwane was the first choice to direct the Sourav Ganguly biopic, but he passed on the film to focus on his other projects. The makers then considered Tamil director Aishwarya Rajinikanth, but that also fizzled out later. Although it's yet unknown what brought Motwane back to this film, he has already begun working on it and is excited to depict Ganguly’s life story on screen in the most inventive way possible.
