Exclusive: Sparsh Shrivastava recalls audition for Laapataa Ladies-Took rice box from kitchen, balanced phone on a wooden stick to shoot self-tape

Kiran Rao's directorial comeback, Laapataa Ladies, is trending globally for the right reasons. It revolves around the lives of Phool (Nitanshi Goel), Pushpa (Pratibha Ranta) and Deepak (Sparsh Shrivastava) and how they go through turmoil when the newlywed brides get exchanged on a train. The film performed well at the box office and with its OTT release, it has reached international waters and people cannot get over the beauty of Kiran's storytelling. Nitanshi, Pratibha and Sparsh are winning hearts for their incredible performances.

In an exclusive interview with PeepingMoon, Sparsh, who played the lead character of Deepak, revealed his audition for Laapataa Ladies. He recalled shooting his video during the lockdown and creating a make-shift tripod using ingredients and equipment available in the kitchen. Sparsh shared, "My audition was during lockdown, we were sending our self-tapes. There was no tripod at home at that time. People couldn't even step outside because of the lockdown."

The actor added, "I took out a rice box from my kitchen, fixed a wooden stick inside it and balanced the phone on it by taking support of the window. This way, I got the right amount of lighting. I recorded my audition. Those 4 pages of the audition script were amazing. Then, I realized that the whole script was brilliant. I just wanted to crack the role. So, I memorised those 4 pages in half an hour and sent it to the casting director immediately. The first call I got from him was, "Teri train kidhar bhage jaa rahi hai? Take your time." I didn't want to lose this opportunity as there were more people auditioning for the role of Deepak. Aamir sir (producer of Laapataa Ladies, Aamir Khan) and Kiran ma'am saw my audition on their big projector."

Sparsh's audition procedure didn't end there. "They (Aamir and Kiran) liked that audition. I think that was one of the first auditions for Deepak. They were pretty sure about casting me. However, since I sent the audition tape pretty quickly, they wanted to test me thoroughly. Hence, we did multiple auditions. For about 2 months, we auditioned for Deepak. Then I received a call saying I was chosen for Laapataa Ladies. Those 2 months were very stressful," revealed Sparsh.

Laapataa Ladies released in theatres on March 1.
