Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films-backed Munjya is releasing in theatres on June 7. Headlined by Mona Singh, Sharvari and Abhay Verma, the film is a horror-comedy revolving around the spirit of a child who is on a search for his 'Munni'. Aditya Sarpotdar, known for making popular Marathi films like Zombivli, is directing it. The mention of Munni in the teaser and trailer of Munjya sparked the conversation about whether Malaika Arora will be seen in a special appearance. For the unversed, the actress iconised the song, Munni Badnaam Hui, from Dabangg.
Dismissing the buzz that Malaika will be in Munjya, Aditya told PeepingMoon exclusively that it is not true. The director said, "So Malaika, whatever you see of her, is doing her Munni Badnaam Hui dance in the phone footage that one of my characters is holding. Beyond that, you will never see her. Malaika is not in the film. She is known to be Munni, but in Munjya, my Munni is different."
He added, "You can always have this alternate theory. In Bajrangi Bhaijaan, there was a Munni. So, will I get that Munni in my film? It's just a very generic term for a girl who is beloved. Munni is who is she in my film and what does she have to do with Munjya and what is the reference, that's the story of my film. There is no Malaika in my film but yes, there is a very interesting twist to this whole Munni narrative."
Talking about Munjya, Aditya said, For me, my hero and my protagonist is Munjya and when I say that, I know that when I'm building the world of the film, I'm setting the world up so that my primary character makes the most of it. He is presented in the best possible way and the world he comes from is so intriguing that most efforts went behind kind of getting that right."
