PeepingMoon Exclusive: Netflix India taps Asur director Oni Sen for a war drama series on Operation Safed Sagar

Netflix India is embarking on another compelling true story. Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that the global streaming giant is developing a web series based on "Operation Safed Sagar," a pivotal mission conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on the world’s highest battlefield during the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan.

Popular web series Asur fame Oni Sen has been tapped to direct this project that Sanjay Routray, Sarita Patil, and Dikssha Jyoti Routray will produce under their Matchbox Shots banner. The show will chronicle the IAF’s 47-day historic operation, executed in collaboration with the Indian Army’s ground forces, to flush out the Pakistani army and paramilitary troops from Indian positions along the Line of Control, turning the tide of the war in India's favour. This operation, which was launched on May 26, 1999, comprised precision airstrikes using fighter planes, attack helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles to remove enemy soldiers from high-altitude positions.

Operation Safed Sagar marked a significant milestone in military aviation history, underscoring the Indian Air Force’s capability to conduct effective limited warfare and its proficiency in handling challenging combat scenarios. The operation challenged traditional air power theories and necessitated innovative operational strategies. Oni Sen and the Matchbox Shots team have undertaken extensive research to authentically portray the bravery and tactical acumen of the Indian Air Force during this critical period. No cast is attached to this project yet, but the makers are eyeing to take it into production by the end of this year or early 2025.

The Oni Sen project further strengthens the content partnership between Netflix and Matchbox Shots, following their successful collaborations on Vasan Bala’s Monica, O My Darling and Hansal Mehta’s Scoop. Additionally, they are already collaborating on Anubhav Sinha’s IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, featuring an ensemble cast including Vijay Varma, Pankaj Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Patralekha, and Dibyendu Bhattacharya.

Matchbox Shots, acclaimed for producing critically recognised films such as Andhadhun and Three of Us, is also partnering with Amazon Prime Video on a horror drama series titled Khauf, starring Monika Panwar, Rajat Kapoor, Abhishek Chauhan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, and Gagan Arora. The banner is also developing a series on the slain Punjabi rapper Sidhu Moose Wala, based on crime journalist Rupinderjit Singh’s book, Who Killed Moosewala?
