Aamir Khan is accelerating his production business. Peepingmoon.com has learned that the Bollywood superstar aims to turn Aamir Khan Productions into a content studio under the leadership of its newly appointed CEO, Aparna Purohit, who joined the company this month after an eight-year stint at Amazon Prime India.
“Aamir has long aspired to transform his production house into a full-fledged studio, and this is precisely why he has brought on board Aparna, who's been with Amazon Prime Video since its inception in India and launched over 70 shows and films and developed over 100 others during her tenure. Bringing with her a wealth of experience and expertise in content creation and distribution, Aparna will run AKF like a studio, similar to how Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions are operated, and will pull together a solid lineup,” a trade source aware of the development told us.
Carrying on the tradition of their groundbreaking storytelling, Aamir Khan Productions plans to produce at least 3–4 projects each year that are authentic and rooted in a way that resonates with audiences. The company, which has produced only theatrical movies so far, will also foray into OTT shows now. “The volume and scale of productions will increase under Aparna's leadership. She has already started building a slate, focusing significantly on co-production partnerships with other collaborators. By the time the current projects of AKF are released, Aparna will have a new slate ready,” the source further added.
Aamir Khan Productions currently has six projects in various stages of production, including Aamir’s next acting venture, Sitare Zameen Par, scheduled for release on the Christmas weekend this year. The slate also includes two movies starring Aamir’s son Junaid Khan: the Love Today remake with Khusi Kapoor and a romantic drama alongside Sai Pallavi. Other projects lined up are Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi’s much-awaited period drama, Lahore 1947; Sunil Pandey’s small-town quirky comedy, Pritam Pyaare, starring Sanjay Mishra and Neeraj Sood; and Vir Das’ spy comedy, featuring Aamir and Imran Khan in cameo roles.
Aamir Khan Productions is popularly known for backing content-driven, socially conscious hatke movies that leave a lasting impact on audiences. Lagan, Sitare Zameen Par, Peepli Live, Dhobi Ghat, Delhi Belly, Dangal, and Secret Superstar are some prime examples of movies the banner has produced over the years. Their recent release, the Kiran Rao-directed Laapataa Ladies, has been a popular theatrical hit this year and one of the most-watched Hindi movies on Netflix, surpassing the views of blockbusters like Animal and Fighter.
