Exclusive: Maharaj: Siddharth P Malhotra on Aamir Khan's son says “We launched Junaid Khan as an actor, not as a hero”

Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan made his acting debut with the Netflix film Maharaj. Unfortunately being a star kid and his first movie there was no buzz in the market. Despite zero promotions the movie already sparked controversy for its storyline. Junaid shines bright as Karsandas Mulji in the period drama flick helmed by Siddharth Malhotra. In an exclusive interview with PeepingMoon, the director opened up on why Junaid was the right choice and how Aamir Khan had his involvement.

Maharaj director Siddharth P Malhotra was questioned about what made him think Junaid as a fresh face was the right choice for the role. He said, “I saw Junaid’s audition for Laal Singh Chaddha where he played the lead character, and I had met him 2-3 times earlier. So when we were finding Karsandas Mulji instead of bringing a filmy hero he would get his baggage to that character and Karasandas Mulji is a new guy with a mustache, a 23-year-old aspiring journalist. I feel Junaid had it all, and when I saw his audition I felt this is a fresh take. This is a potential role and it requires rawness and Yash Raj is anyway a big company that has launched newcomers. So why not give the industry another newcomer. And we launched him as an actor, we've not launched him as a hero, we launched him as Karsandas Mulji so kudos to him for choosing and accepting this role.  “

Further he spoke about Aamir Khan’s involvement in his sons’s debut movie. Malhotra said, “Aamir Khan didn’t promote the movie. He has left his son and his performance talk. He was like this movie is made by you both so you release the movie and my blessings are with you. I think that is how a dignified means of letting someone be who they are rather than what they are.” Adding further he said, “Wth Aditya Chopra, Aamir Khan will not involve himself in the production. Aamir Khan was given the respect that we are launching his son so he heard the script and after that, he came up on the first day of the shoot with his family to bless us. He saw the edit and he loved the film.”
