Dharmatic and Netflix plan relationship drama with Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta

Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment is expanding its roster. PeepingMoon.com has reliably learned that Dharma Productions' digital subsidiary has set up a female-led Netflix movie and is looking at Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta (Laapataa Ladies) in lead roles.

Konkona and Pratibha have been considered to headline the narrative along with a talented ensemble supporting cast that is currently being finalized. The plot and other details are currently kept under wraps, but it's believed to be a relationship drama with comedic undertones. Anubhuti Kashyap, who last directed Ayushmann Khurrana and Rakul Preet in Junglee Pictures' Doctor G, will helm this film from the script written by Sima Agarwal and Yash Keshwani, known for penning movies like Anek and Khaali Peeli.

Kashyap was signed with Dharma Productions even before her feature debut, Doctor G, was released in theatres in 2022. She was previously working on a romantic comedy for the banner that had Ishaan Khatter and Triptii Dimri attached to play the leads, but the project never got off the ground for unspecified reasons. Her latest endeavour is believed to be a progressive story centered on the relationship between two women. The film is currently in the pre-production stage and will go into production around September-October 2024.

This new project marks Dharmatic Entertainment's seventh project for Netflix India, following successful partnerships on movies and shows like Guilty, Ajeeb Daastaans, Searching for Sheela, Meenakshi Sundareshwar, Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, and The Fame Game. For Konkona Sen Sharma, this will be her second collaboration with Dharmatic after Ajeeb Daastaans and her fifth project for Netflix after Cargo, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, Ajeeb Daastaans, and Killer Soup.

Dharmatic Entertainment currently has five projects lined up for various OTT platforms. Ananya Panday's Call Me Bae and Tamannah Bhatia’s Daring Partners will premiere on Amazon Prime Video, while Kritika Kamra, Dhairya Karwa, and Raghav Juyal starrer, the investigative fantasy drama Gyaarah Gyaarah, is scheduled to premiere on August 9 on ZEE5. The slate also includes the third season of Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives for Netflix, and a web series adaptation of Student of the Year for Disney+Hotstar.

Meanwhile, Konkona will next be seen in Anurag Basu’s much-awaited anthology, Metro… In Dino, slated to release on November 29. She is also doing a short film, titled Chashma, directed by popular editor Nitin Baid, and is in advanced talks with Junglee Pictures for a thriller project. Pratibha Ranta is also on cloud nine following the success of Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies and has already signed a romantic film opposite Vikrant Massey.
