After setting the box office on fire with Gadar 2 last year, Sunny Deol is returning with a follow-up to his another classic film, Border (1997). The highly anticipated sequel is being promoted as India's biggest war film, and the makers are assembling an impressive pan-India cast to back up their claim. While Deol returns to reprise Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri's role, Ayushmann Khurrana has been rumoured to play a parallel lead in the film. Adding to the excitement, the makers have now brought on board another big name to the cast.
Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh has joined Sunny Deol in Border 2. The singer-actor, who most recently portrayed the renowned Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila in Imtiaz Ali's highly acclaimed Netflix film of the same name, will once again be seen essaying a real-life character in this Indo-Pak war drama. His character details are currently kept under wraps, but Dosanjh is enthusiastic about the opportunity to play a real army officer and will soon begin his preparation to fully inhabit the role.
Dosanjh’s casting in Border 2 is hardly surprising considering his frequent collaborations with the film's director, Anurag Singh. They have teamed up on five films in the last twelve years, and the Border sequel only continues their partnership, following two Jatt & Juliet movies, Disco Singh, Punjab 1984, and Super Singh. As for Ayushmann Khurrana’s casting, he is still in negotiations with the makers and hasn’t given his final approval yet. Suniel Shetty’s son Ahan Shetty is rumoured to be in the cast as well, although we were unable to confirm this. Punjabi actor Ammy Virk, who was recently seen in Bad Newz, was also rumoured to join the film, but it’s unclear if he is still a part of it or Diljit Dosanjh will take on the character initially intended for him.
The plot details of Border 2 haven't been revealed yet, but media reports claim it to be taking place the same night as the events of the original Border. The second part will reportedly recount the Battle of Longewala from the perspectives of all three wings of the Indian armed forces: the Army, Navy, and Air Force. While J.P. Dutta directed the 1997 classic, the directorial baton for the sequel has been passed on to Anurag Singh, popularly known in the Hindi belt for directing Akshay Kumar’s Kesari. The film is currently in the pre-production stage and will go on floors around November 2024, eyeing a theatrical release on the Republic Day weekend 2026.
