The chants of “Laut Aao Imran Khan” have been heard loud and clear. The Delhi Belly actor, who has been hinting at his return to movies since last August, is finally making a comeback after a nine-year hiatus. Imran has been exploring various projects, and he seems to have found the perfect script to end his acting sabbatical.
Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Imran Khan will return on screen with a Netflix film produced by Aamir Khan. The details of the project are currently kept under wraps, but sources reveal it's a romantic comedy and will be directed by Danish Aslam, who previously helmed Imran and Deepika Padukone's 2010 comedy, Break Ke Baad. The film is believed to be a lighthearted, breezy entertainer, showcasing Imran in the kind of role that audiences have always loved him in.
The yet-untitled romcom is the first OTT project by Aamir Khan Productions and the first to be greenlighted under the leadership of the company's newly appointed CEO, Aparna Purohit. The banner is producing this film in partnership with Open Air Films, a content company behind Netflix projects like Leila and Cobalt Blue. Shooting begins in a few months.
For Imran, it's a life coming full circle as he kicks off the second phase of his career with his maternal uncle, Aamir Khan, who also launched him into movies, first as a child actor with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and later as the leading man with Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na in 2008. The duo later also collaborated on Abhinay Deo's black comedy Delhi Belly (2011), which remains one of the most notable films of Imran's career.
Imran has been selective about his comeback, especially after his previously planned web series with Abbas Tyrewala fell through. He was initially supposed to play an intelligence officer in Disney+Hotstar’s espionage thriller series set in the cloak-and-dagger world of South Asian counterintelligence. Siddharth Roy Kapur was producing, but the project was put on the backburner due to the merger between Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Company. Imran later expressed relief at the cancellation, stating that he doesn’t want to play a character who solves problems with a gun. Now with Danish Aslam's romcom, he seems to have found the ideal project to make his return to acting, and we are excited to see how it plays out.
The Imran Khan film is the latest addition to Aamir Khan Productions’ exciting lineup. The company’s upcoming slate includes RS Prasanna’s Sitare Zameen Par, starring Aamir and Genelia Deshmukh; Rajkumar Santoshi’s Lahore 1947, starring Sunny Deol; Sunil Pandey’s Pritam Pyare, starring Sanjay Mishra and Neeraj Sood; Junaid Khan’s One Day remake with Sai Pallavi; and Vir Das’ Happy Patel, featuring Aamir in a cameo role.
