Aanand L Rai is a renowned filmmaker in Indian Cinema who has delivered meaningful movies as a director and producer. One of the most celebrated movies under his banner Colour Yellow Productions is Tumbbad which has garnered wide recognition worldwide. In an exclusive interview with PeepingMoon speaking about what role Indian cinema plays globally, the filmmaker claims the way to go global is through regional.
Tumbbad tagged as a cinematic masterpiece has created massive buzz following its theatrical re-release after 6 years. On its re-run, the horror fantasy film has created history breaking its original box office number. The folklore adventure has also received love and appreciation across the world after being premiered at several international film festivals. Aanand L Rai who produced Tumbbad shared his idea of films going global, in an exclusive interview with PeepingMoon.com
Sharing a learning from Indian cinema’s greatest filmmaker Satyajit Ray, he said, “I understood long back, and this was said by one of the greatest filmmakers from our country. And the great man was Satyajit Ray. He said the way to go global is through regional. This was said by him long back. Aur main har baar sochta tha ki iska exact matlab kya hai. This means stay original, stay close to the roots, pick up those stories and take it global that will go global. And Tumbbad is one of those examples.”
He continued, “Picking up from our folk folklore and see how it is creating that magic. So ye baht zaroori hai samajhna ki agar koi cheez hume door leke jaa sakti hai woh hai originality. Aap kitna khudko waisa rakh pate hai jaisa aap hai is the only way you get globalized.”
With Aanand L Rai’s idea of ‘the way to go global is through regional’ we can’t agree more as recently Laapataa Ladies showcased a story of a village where two newly wedded brides are swapped. This Kiran Rao directorial movie got recognised globally becoming the official entry from India to the Oscars 2025. Apart from this many Indian movies have gained recognition globally at several international film festivals.
