EXCLUSIVE: Gulshan Kumar biopic is being revived; Ranbir Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana and Varun Dhawan are top contenders for lead

T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar remains committed to Mogul, a long-gestating biopic that aims to chronicle the life of his late father, the music baron Gulshan Kumar. Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Kumar is once again breathing new life into his most ambitious project after multiple unsuccessful attempts over the past few years.

Industry sources have revealed that Bhushan Kumar has started putting things together again to bring his father's extraordinary, larger-than-life story to the big screen. The producer is rebuilding the project from the ground up, and although the timeline for this film still hasn't been decided, it's believed to be now in top priority and in active development at T-Series. Subhash Kapoor, who was initially supposed to direct it, is no longer attached to this project, while the script too is undergoing significant revisions, with a new team of writers brought on board to reimagine the narrative.

Although the film is currently in the scripting stage and far from entering production, insiders reveal that Bhushan Kumar has already initiated talks with Ranbir Kapoor to headline the biopic. Ranbir has expressed interest, though negotiations have not progressed far enough to confirm anything concretely. The Brahmastra actor's packed schedule till 2026 might not allow him to do this project, but Bhushan is keen to have him on board. In case Ranbir declines the offer, Bhushan is planning to approach Ayushmann Khurrana and Varun Dhawan for the role, as per sources familiar with the development.

The Gulshan Kumar biopic was first announced in March 2017, with Akshay Kumar cast as the lead under Subhash Kapoor's direction. However, Akshay later left the project due to creative differences. A year later, Aamir Khan came on board as both star and co-producer, but he stepped back following sexual misconduct allegations against Kapoor during the #MeToo movement. Although Aamir briefly returned to the project, his priorities changed following the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha, leading him to take a break from films. He eventually returned with a different project, leaving Mogul in limbo.
