After bringing the remarkable story of legendary Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila to life on screen last year, Imtiaz Ali is set to collaborate once again with Netflix India. Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that the Tamasha director has next set up a romantic drama series for the streaming giant, starring Arjun Rampal and Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead roles.
The show has tentatively been titled “O Saathi Rey” and will be directed by Imtiaz’s brother Sajid Ali, with Imtiaz serving as the writer and showrunner. Sajid is popularly known for directing Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri’s Laila Majnu (2018), which saw a resurgence in popularity upon its theatrical re-release last year. Imtiaz is also producing this series under his banner, Window Seat Films.
Plot details of the project have been kept under wraps, but we heard it will be an emotionally charged narrative centered around an extramarital affair. The pairing of Arjun Rampal and Aditi Rao Hydari promises a fresh and compelling romantic dynamic, offering viewers a unique and engaging watch. Both actors are eager to embark on this new journey and will commence shooting in February 2025.
This romantic series will mark Aditi Rao Hydari’s first endeavor after her wedding to Tamil actor Siddharth in September 2024. It will also mark her third project with Netflix after last year's Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s maiden web series, Heera Mandi, and Dharmatic Entertainment’s anthology, Ajeeb Daastaans (2021). Coming ahead, she has three films in the pipeline: a Tamil-Telugu bilingual with Thoongaa Vanam director Rajesh M Selva and an Indo-UK co-production inspired by the life of Princess Sophia Duleep, granddaughter of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the goddaughter of Queen Victoria, and a silent film called “Gandhi Talks” with Vijay Sethupathi and Arvind Swamy, set for an OTT release this year.
Speaking of Arjun Rampal, he is currently shooting for Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller, Dhurandhar, with Ranveer Singh and has five movies ready and set for release in the coming months. His lineup includes Punjab 95 with Diljit Dosanjh, Abbas-Mustan’s 3 Monkeys and Penthouse, Nikita Roy and the Book of Darkness with Sonakshi Sinha, and the historical drama The Battle of Bhima Koregaon.
