Peeping Moon EXCLUSIVE: Gulshan Kumar biopic is back on track; Srikanth director Tushar Hiranandani on board to direct

T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar has been striving to bring the biopic of his father, the late music baron Gulshan Kumar, to the big screen since 2017. Titled “Mogul,” the film was officially announced with Akshay Kumar essaying the lead role under Subhash Kapoor's direction. However, the Khiladi Kumar walked out of the project due to creative differences. A year later, Aamir Khan came on board as an actor and co-producer, but the project faced another setback when he also stepped away following sexual misconduct allegations against director Subhash Kapoor during the #MeToo movement in 2018.

Now, eight years later, the long-delayed Mogul is officially gaining momentum again. Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Bhushan Kumar is reviving his most ambitious project with an all-new creative team. The producer has signed on “Srikanth” director Tushar Hiranandani to helm and rebuild the biographical drama from the ground up. Acclaimed for his adept handling of real-life stories, Hiranandani has been brought on board to reshape the narrative with a fresh perspective, distinct from the vision originally conceptualized by Subhash Kapoor.

Tushar recently directed the critically acclaimed and commercially successful biopic of Srikanth Bolla, a visually impaired industrialist and the founder of Bollant Industries. Having produced that film, Bhushan Kumar is well-acquainted with Tushar’s talent and trusts him to handle “Mogul” with the necessary sensitivity and integrity. The screenwriter-turned-director has also demonstrated his expertise in real-life storytelling with projects such as "Saand Ki Aankh," which depicted the lives of Indian sharpshooters Chandro and Prakashi Tomar, and the SonyLIV series "Scam 2003," which detailed the massive counterfeit stamp paper scam led by Abdul Karim Telgi in the early 2000s.

“Mogul” has now been fast-tracked at T-Series, with Hiranandani and a team of writers actively working on a fresh screenplay under Bhushan Kumar’s supervision. The goal is to bring Gulshan Kumar’s extraordinary and larger-than-life journey to the silver screen in its most authentic form and celebrate his legacy through a cinematic tribute that resonates with contemporary audiences.

Casting for the film hasn’t been finalized yet, but the makers are eyeing to rope in an A-list young star to portray the legendary T-Series founder. Although there were rumours that Ranbir Kapoor was being considered for the role, sources have confirmed that he is not doing the film. The makers plan to approach actors only after the script is completed. Production is slated to begin early next year.
