Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Mulk’ (2018) marked a significant turning point in his career, shifting his focus from mainstream commercial cinema to socially relevant narratives. Sinha reinvented himself as a filmmaker with this Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu and Prateik Babbar courtroom drama. It led to the emergence of what many call "Anubhav Sinha 2.0," resulting in a series of critically-acclaimed, socio-political dramas such as ‘Article 15,’ ‘Thappad,’ ‘Anek,’ and ‘Bheed.’ Now, seven years later, Sinha is going back to court again for a new project similar to ‘Mulk.’
PeepingMoon.com has exclusively learned that Sinha is directing a courtroom drama starring Taapsee Pannu in the lead. Although this new project bears similarities to ‘Mulk’ in its thematic approach, it is not being positioned as ‘Mulk 2,’ as Sinha intends to avoid the trend of unnecessary sequels. Like his previous outings, this film is said to be tackling hard-hitting and burning issues and promises to deliver a thought-provoking message that resonates with contemporary society. It's expected to be yet another fearless storytelling from Sinha, staying true to his signature courage of addressing topics that many filmmakers shy away from.
This yet-untitled film marks Taapsee’s third collaboration with Sinha, following ‘Mulk’ and ‘Thappad.’ The ensemble cast also includes seasoned actors and Sinha’s frequent collaborators, Manoj Pahwa and Kumud Mishra, with additional casting underway for other key roles. The film will be produced by Sinha himself under his Benaras Media Works banner. Production is scheduled to commence in April in Delhi.
Taapsee will start shooting after finishing Netflix India's action thriller, ‘Gandhari,’ where she plays a fierce mom on a relentless pursuit to find and rescue her kidnapped daughter. The ‘Haseen Dillruba’ actress also has a romantic comedy, ‘Woh Ladki Hai Kahan,’ with Pratik Gandhi slated to release this year.
