Peeping Moon Exclusive: Shanaya Kapoor and Abhay Varma begin shooting period comedy set in Goa today

Shanaya Kapoor’s time has come. After years of attempts to break into Bollywood under Karan Johar’s banner, Sanjay Kapoor’s daughter is finally making her debut — with four back-to-back projects! Just yesterday, she announced a genre-bending romantic survival thriller with Aanand L. Rai, and today, she has already begun shooting for another film.

PeepingMoon.com has exclusively learned that Shanaya will star alongside ‘Munjya’ actor Abhay Varma in a period comedy tentatively titled ‘JC’. Its plot and characters remain under wraps. But the film is said to be a caper comedy set in Goa during 1987. Shujaat Saudagar, a director recognized for Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Rock On 2’ and the Amazon Prime series ‘Bambai Meri Jaan’, helms this film that promises a seamless blend of romance, drama, and humor, all woven into a nostalgic period setting. Filming began in Goa today and is slated to be wrapped up by mid-May, with a theatrical release targeted for late 2025.

‘JC’ is being produced by Vauve Emirates (‘Badtameez Gill’, ‘The Midnight Guardian’) in association with Chalkboard Entertainment (‘Gulmohar’, ‘The Mehta Boys’) and Karma Media and Entertainment (‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Shahid’). Avinash Sampath, Shujaat Saudagar, Milind Daimade, and Vijay Maurya have written the script. ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’ and ‘Rocket Boys’ fame Achint Thakkar is composing the music, with Varun Grover penning the lyrics.

This project marks Shanaya’s third acting endeavor, following her previously announced films: Mohanlal’s ‘Vrushabha’, and the musical love story, ‘Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan’, opposite Vikrant Massey. She is also set to star alongside ‘Superboys of Malegaon’ actor Adarsh Gourav in ‘Taish’ director Bejoy Nambiar’s ‘Tu Yaa Main’, which was announced just yesterday with a striking teaser that has already generated significant buzz.

Shanaya’s co-star Abhay Varma is also in high demand following the blockbuster success of Maddock Films’ ‘Munjya’. This Shujaat Saudagar film marks the third project he has bagged since his breakthrough. Abhay has also bagged Shah Rukh Khan and Siddharth Anand's ‘King’ and recently finished shooting for a Netflix series, directed by ‘Asur’ fame Oni Sen. The latter is a war drama series based on Operation Safed Sagar and features Siddharth, Jimmy Sheirgill, Dia Mirza, and Abhay Varma in the lead roles.
