Karan Johar is not returning to the director’s chair for a web series just yet. PeepingMoon.com has learned that the filmmaker’s web series debut, tentatively titled ‘Jet Set Go,’ is temporarily put on the backburner due to casting and financial constraints.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of the aviation industry in the 1970s, ‘Jet Set Go’ was envisioned as a big-budget, star-studded drama led by three prominent female protagonists. However, Karan is believed to have faced significant challenges in securing A-list Bollywood actresses to headline this Netflix series and justify the high production costs. Most of the actresses he approached were unavailable due to prior commitments or hesitant to transition to the web space. After multiple attempts to secure a suitable star cast, Karan is said to have realized that the timing wasn’t ideal to proceed and reportedly decided to shelve the project for now.
‘Jet Set Go’ was poised to mark Karan’s foray into digital storytelling after a 27-year career directing iconic theatrical films, including blockbusters like ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998), ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2000), ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ (2006), and ‘My Name Is Khan’ (2010). The series was positioned as one of Netflix’s most ambitious Indian originals, with plans to mount it on a massive scale. The script had been finalized, and soft preparation had also begun.
This cancellation, however, is not permanent. Karan remains enthusiastic about reviving this project at a later stage when the circumstances are more favorable. His Dharmatic Entertainment and Netflix India continue their fruitful partnership and currently have two films in production. This includes Anubhuti Kashyap's relationship drama starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta and ‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’ fame Vivek Soni’s quirky romcom, ‘Aap Jaisa Koi,’ featuring R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh. The digital content company also has Tamannaah Bhatia’s ‘Daring Partners’ and Ananya Panday's ‘Call Me Bae Season 2’ with Amazon Prime Video, and Shanaya Kapoor starrer ‘Student of the Year 3’ with Jio Hotstar lined up ahead.
