The first Monday of May is a red letter day for fashion in Hollywood. The crème of international fashion congregates at the highly popular Met Gala to make jaws drop globally. The Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is the biggest fundraising event of the fashion industry and never fails to make a splash. The theme this year - Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination – saw celebrities putting their best religious-inspired foot forward.
Grabbing eyeballs were Rihanna who channeled the Pope with her beaded bishop’s hat, Sarah Jessica Parker in a gold Dolce & Gabbana gown topped off by an elaborate nativity-scene headpiece, Amber Heard who matched her scarlet Carolina Herrera gown with a halo, and Katy Perry who arrived wearing a giant pair of feathered wings with her gold chainmail Versace mini dress and thigh-high boots.
Our very own Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone were also there, the former admittedly winning more attention. PeeCee was dressed in a strapless Ralph Lauren velvet dress with a jewelled hood. Tweets poured in praising Priyanka's fashion fearlessness, with many going so far as to say that Priyanka and Ralph Lauren were "a match made in heaven". Her latest international red carpet appearance got her listed among the best-dressed celebs at the Met Gala 2018.

For Deepika, it was yet another miss. Even though she looked sensational in a red draped dress designed by Prabal Gurung, complete with scarlet heels, her look did not win brownie points. Where was the connection to the theme, DP? While one social media user pointed out that the stylist got the opportunity to dress Deepika Padukone for the Met Gala and completely missed the theme, another rued the fact that people disregard the theme every year. Last year too, DP was trolled for not adhering to the theme and playing safe. Time to take a tip from your contemporary who is acing the red carpet and start living a little dangerously… on the red carpet at least!
