Sabya, Sabya… what have you done? Social media has taken exception to the avant-garde fashion designer from Kolkata who sort of made it seem like the golden red saree worn by Deepika Padukone for her Konkani wedding in Lake Como was one of his signature designs.
Tut-tut, not true. The saree, in fact, was bought by the bride’s mother Ujjala Padukone at a Bengaluru store named Angadi Galleria. And this Sabya only clarified today. Meaning it wasn’t his. After saying on Instagram earlier that Deepika-Ranveer were “head-to-toe in Sabyasachi” at their Lake Como ceremonies.

He got called out by Shefalee Vasudev, editor of the site The Voice of Fashion and author of the novel Powder Room. In a post, Shefalee quoted the Bengaluru store owner Radharaman K. as having said, “Deepika’s Kanjeevaram red gold wedding saree worn with a Sabyasachi veil and jewelry was an Advaya Saree from the House of Angadi in Bengaluru.”

And as per Mangalorean custom, the bride wears a saree given by her mother. Radharaman further added that Deepika herself had bought the saree along with another one from his store. It had on it the Gandaberunda – a mythological figure represented as the coast of arms of the Mysore Maharaja.

When Shefalee brought this to the notice of Sabyasachi (with Radharaman’s permission), the designer’s representative responded saying the saree was indeed given by the bride’s mother to them. And they trimmed and styled it. Credit was due to the store, of course, only Sabyasachi did not have details of the House of Angadi earlier, the representative said.
However, social media trolls are unforgiving. They are asking the designer, “What is the meaning of ‘head-to-toe in Sabyasachi’, then?” And if he didn’t know from where the saree had been procured to give the store credit, why, all Sabya had to do was ask the bride or her mother! As simple as that!

Somebody with a sharper memory than most remembers that this is not the first time Sabya is forgetting to give credit to another designer or store for bridal wear that got mistaken for his own. It happened at the Anushka Sharma-Virat Kohli wedding reception in New Delhi last year, too. That time it was reportedly a red Benarasi saree that went on Instagram as a Sabya creation.
