Remembering Karl Lagerfeld: A sartorial genius, a controversial opinionist and a cat lover

The news of Karl Lagerfeld's death has hit us like a trainwreck. The man, who was the creative director of Chanel and Fendi, was one of the most influential and revered personalities of the industry.

Growing into a workaholic at a young age at a staggering pace didn't do any good to his workload in the past years. Been one of the forever busy personalities, Karl preached his peers and colleagues to do the same. He managed 3 labels, namely Chanel, Fendi and his personal label, together for more than 20 years and released approximately 15 collections in one year itself!

Sticking to the voice of the brand, Karl overcame all odds that stood in his way. He always presented what the brand as a voice would want, and not what he personally liked.

The LBD, fur details, pearl add-ons, tweed and so much more, these iconic elements are his contribution to the brand. But his ideals and his love for his work often became a problem to the others.

Admittedly a lover of his job, he often went overboard with his practices. So much at times that he would wake up in the middle of the night just to draw rough sketches of a fresh idea!

But he was a man with a sharp tongue. While many mourn his death, many others are opposed to paying their tributes to the sartorial legend.

He has more than often been a part of controversies which found its foundation in his proactive and sometimes, offensive statements. Like his take on models speaking about #Metoo movement, or the one where he bashed oversized models by saying 'nobody wants to see curvy women' or about the time when he fought to include fur in his collection.

But not everyone has a positive legacy to give. Sometimes the words speak louder than his actions and Karl was that exception to the general rule. While he gave us a lot to learn and a lifetime of work to cherish, his glorious deeds will not surpass the cruel, rash and offensive statements he's made. A man of strong opinions, he always supported his words even if it were the wrong party.

But ideally a man with no folk some, Karl considered Chanel as his family, as he considered his cat, his own child. A cat lover at heart, he was obsessed with his feline. So much, that he wrote Choupette's name on his will! Anna Wintour rightly said at the British Fashion Awards 2015, “I have often thought that in my next life, I would like to come back as Choupette, his extremely beautiful and bourgeois cat,”  and we really think we would like the very same!

So in other news, the world lost a sartorial genius, the tabloids lost an easy target and the fortunate cat inherited a legacy of 14,000 crore.
