With the ever-graceful Venice film Festival concluding recently, it was now time for our Hollywood brigade to bring back the dramatics for the year with MTV’s Video Music Awards, popularly known as VMAs. With red carpet events gradually becoming a thing once again, we got to witness the live show with high-end couture with boundary-pushing style statements and daring looks- Bless the lord! Hosted by Doja Cat, the soiree witnessed some big names such as Lil Nas X, Jennifer Lopez, Normani, and many others leaving us anticipated for their bold and statement looks.
While some stood out, others either went overboard with drama or lacked it by a tad bit. Here are some hits and misses from the show:
HITS:
LIL NAS X
Like always, Lil Nas X understood the assignment and delivered a STUNNING gender bender look in a lavender strain suit from Atelier Versace. Also, kudos to the styling!
NORMANI
Normani left little to the imagination with her deconstructed suit from an up-and-coming designer Patrycja Pagas that featured a micro-wrap skirt and cropped blazer. The risk seemed to have paid off as she totally owned this bold look, however, we wished that the skirt would have been just a tad long to cover her crotch. Your thoughts?
TROY SIVAN
Another deconstructed look for the night and it was Troy pulling off a Fendi look like a pro. What’s VMA without dramatics?!
HALLE BAILEY
Fittings and styling play an important role in creating looks and Halle’s Monot number stands sheer proof. Here feisty white gown was elegantly put and we are here for it!
DOJA CAT
Not just music Doja’s wardrobe has also been growing strength to strength and this look speaks for the same. She did not fear to experiment with her Vivienne Westwood look with thigh-high red latex boots, crab earrings and purple wrap-around. Since this event is an apt opportunity to funk things up, Doja really grabbed her chance!
MEGAN FOX- MACHINE GUN KELLY
Megan SLAYED her way into the VMAs with her THE naked dress from Mugler and we are gaping for our breath. The wet hairdo and nude glam complemented her attire however we feel the heels could have been different than the one she was wearing. Kelly, too slayed away in a blazing red embellished Mugler suit and they surely made for one power couple on the fashion front.
KACEY MUSGRAVES
Feathers, latex gloves and popping colours, Kacey’s Valentino couture included everything without it being a 20 feet gown with a train!
ASHANTI
Ashanti got some drama going with her strappy Michael Costello number and we are here for it!
MISSES
JENNIFER LOPEZ
Contrary to the theme, we feel Jlo dialed down the red carpet drama and played safe with her criss-cross David Coma number. With her ability to pull off anything under the sun, this definitely feels a tad bit downer.
ANITTA, OLIVIA RODRIGO AND CAMILA CABELLO
Anitta opted for an elegant Miss Sohee gown, Olivia wore a Vintage Versace and Camila showed up in an Alexis Mabille couture for the gala. Sadly, that didn’t fit the theme of the night. Had they she saved this look for some other occasion and went high on drama, it would have been a different picture altogether.
BILLY PORTER
Although Billy ticked off the drama on the list but was that enough? This silver Landeros look something that he has done before but this time it didn’t work its charm. The style icon is capable of much more than this as we have seen him bring magic on the red carpet every time.
CIARA
Ciara skipped the drama and opted for a lacy look in Tom Ford that gave some elegant +formal red carpet vibes.
AVRIL LAVIGNE
As we said, well-fitted couture works wonders and sadly Avril had to find out the hard way. The ill-fitted bandeau embellished top brought down the drama of this Area number. Had she buttoned up the plaid blazer we could have seen the heart-shaped detailing as well!
HAILEY BIEBER
Supermodel Hailey took the super-safe way in Maison Alaia’s sheer white number. Where is the drama?!
SHAWN MENDES
Almost a good look if one ignores the baggy long pants! What do you think?
CHLOE BAILEY
The aluminum foil dress, the spoon, the zippers...drama gone overboard!
