20 Years of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham: Sequined salwar suits and regal sherwanis to sleeveless tee and chokers, today’s raging trends that are a courtesy of K3G

Two decades ago ‘Nandini’ welcomed us in theatres with a thali in her hand and we haven’t mentally left the place since then. Yes, it’s been 20 glorious years since Karan Johar presented his directorial masterpiece Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham back in 2001. Fondly called K3G, the film featured an A-list ensemble cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kajol and Hrithik Roshan.

Not only did KJo rope in the country’s biggest stars and etched out the finest characters out of them, but he also changed the fashion game by bringing in a top-notch wardrobe along with ace costume designer and couturier Manish Malhotra. Complementing the regality of the 'Raichands', the eccentric jazz of Chandni Chowk’s Anjali, and later Poo’s PHAT taste in fashion, the film catered to the classes and masses. Hands down, K3G’s wardrobe inspired many fans and fashionistas to dress like their favorite celebs and paved the way to trendsetting style statements that are relevant even today!

From Rahul’s subtle art of layering and Anjali’s sheer sarees and bright salwar-kameez to Rohan’s sleeveless leather jackets and Poo’s sequin tops and boot cut pants, here’s looking at all the fashion trends that are indeed, courtesy of K3G!

NUDE LIPS

A character as iconic as the actress herself, Poo was the epitome of all things fashion! Moving away from the loud reds and bright oranges, she was the one to show us that an understated lip colour always goes a long way! In almost every scene, Poo rocked a plumped-up nude lip and worked it in her favor.

FANCY CHOKER

Remember when this early ‘2000s fashion icon rocked a popping floral choker and you wanted one? Yeah, the good old days… Poo surely pulled of the choker look in the film effortlessly and started a trend that is popular even today.

SEQUIN BRALETTE AND CROP TOPS

For those Gen Z kids who think sequin bralettes and crop tops belonged to their era- how is the rock you’ve all been living under?! Bebo’s character rocked both of these even before they were cool and thus paved the way for a raging trend.

FAUX FURS

A little bit of fur elevates every look and Poo knew this better. The fashion icon rocked a fur coat and a scarf with short leather skirts and crop tops. A fashion trend which is popular even today!

SHARARA PANTS

Poo’s shimmery sharara pants continue to inspire today’s fashionistas who like to keep things fuss-free. Ditching the big gheras, she danced her way those blingy skirt pants imparting style lessons and hacks to us all. Pretty sure at some point we all had Kareena’s Bole Chudiyaan outfit made for us!

SLIT PANTS

The ever-raging centre-slit pants, sequin crop top and bang on looks...ladies, let's Never forget this ICONIC POO look

THE SUBTLE ART OF LAYERING

Shahrukh Khan’s Rahul knew how to keep things classy with a subtle art of layering. Teaming up suave turtlenecks with pastel blazers, knits with a jacket he gave a classy twist to winter-dressing and caught the attention of girls, on and off the screen!

Also, ladies, it was Rahul Raichand, who wore a sequined kurta with two stoles and STOLE THE SHOW! Both his charismatic looks got picked up by fans who aspired to dress like King Khan himself!

SLEEVELESS FOR MEN

In order to flaunt those toned biceps and triceps Hrithik character wore sleeveless leather jackets and little did he know, he gave birth to a new trend. Rohan showed the boys wearing sleeveless was okay, in fact, sexier! Also, let's appreciate a guy pulling off solid monotones!

SHEER SAREES AND SEQUINED SALWAR SUITS

Not just Poo, Anjali was a trendsetter in her own right. Complementing the Chandni Chowk vibe, Kajol sported bright coloured salwar kameez with sequins and embroidery.

Post interval, the actress personified glamour in sheer sarees teamed with designer blouses.  Both her looks are still a raging trend!

However, this look has a separate fanbase!

KURTAS WITH PASHMINA SHAWLS AND TAILORED SUITS

Let's credit Yash Raichand, the patriarch, who passed on the good fashion sense to both his kids. Amitabh’s pashmina shawls indeed accentuated the regalia of the family. Not to forget those well-trimmed suits and turtlenecks. AB indeed changed the fashion game for senior citizens in this film.

REGAL SAREES

What made Jaya look more ‘Khandani’ were her chikankari and embroidered sarees and pearl jewels. For those who feel that loud colours aren’t appreciated on ladies after a certain age, watch Jaya breaking those stereotypical notions!
