Padmavati will influence millennial brides, says fashionista Maheka Mirpuri

Fashion and jewellery designer Maheka Mirpuri, who is known for her scintillating haute couture and creating spectacular, classy and chic women’s wear ensembles, used Deepika Padukone as her ramp horse before Bollywood came knocking and took the Bangalore beauty and model into films.

Now, as a special feature for PeepingMoon.com, Maheka Mirpuri decodes Deepika’s majestic look as the legendary Rajput queen Padmavati from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s blockbuster Padmaavat and highlights what millennial brides can take away from the period look of the film.

What could a millennial bride take away from Padmaavat’s ensembles and jewellery?

Bollywood has always had a strong influence on styles and trends in India. Padmavati, besides all the controversies that it was embroiled in, is also being talked about for Deepika’s look as the Queen of Chittor. The movie true to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s style scores high on opulence and extravagance. SLB’s costumes have always made a mark as a trend to be followed by the masses.

The costumes and jewellery in the movie showcase an eclectic mix of style, traditions and charisma from the Rajput era. Millennial brides can, in fact, absorb a lot from Deepika’s regal avatar. The voluminous, extravagant, heavily and intricately embroidered ghagras teamed with long blouses give a dreamy and majestic look. Hand crafted embroidery with gota patti and tilla work resonates with the period in which the movie is set. Brocade, mul, chanderi and Kota have been used extensively. Rich jewel tones in varying hues of red set the colour palette. The use of heavy-bordered dupatta is reminiscent of a typical Rajput princess.

I see millennial brides take this trend forward in a big way as it is very rich and opulent. Motifs of the Rajput culture such as the parrot, the lotus, sun, the lion and tree of life will be used extensively. The double layered lehengas and colour blocking will be a big rage. Vintage look will reign with the use of gota patti work. Majestic and regal odhnis or dupattas will be a striking feature of the bridal ensemble.

What will be the biggest bridal trend post Padmaavat?

Heavy embellishments in monochromatic themes will be the charm for brides post PadmaavatDabka, zari and gota work will be a big take away. Use of red in various striking shades will rule. I also feel the jewellery from Padmaavat will be a huge trend for the brides to be. The use of huge exaggerated jewellery was seen throughout the film. Matching naths, opulent earrings, huge bangles and heavy neckpieces will be now carried forward and seen on all brides.

Do brides these days take inspiration from the ancient era and will this movie have a major influence on bridal trends in 2018?

Everything period is very fashionable and I do think Padmaavat too will impact bridal trends of 2018.
