Birthday Special: For Rohit Shetty, 100 crore films are no big deal. Why? Because he has managed to crack the code

Fun. Comedy. Entertainment, and of course, high-octane stunts – if you love such elements in films and enjoy watching masala movies, chances are that Rohit Shetty is one of your favourite directors. Rohit has a different formula for making films – grandeur, for him has a separate meaning altogether. Not chandeliers, red duppattas, kundan jewellery, elaborate sets, grace, poise and all that jazz - instead, Rohit is too filmy, with chartbuster tracks and daredevil stunts becoming his trademark in films. Rohit is a Khatron Ke Khiladi in the truest sense of the phrase and ensures that heroes in his films comply to it as well.  Well, that works for him at least. Hence, the simultaneous 100 crore films to his credit. It’s Rohit’s birthday and we thought of making it special by celebrating his journey in Bollywood so far. Great so far, and looking even better in the future. After working with filmmakers on Suhaag, HaqeeqatZulmi, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha and Raju Chacha, Rohit made his debut as a director with Zameen in 2003. Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, and Bipasha Basu starred in the principle roles in the film but it did average business at the box office. Following Zameen though, there was no sign of Rohit Shetty for a while and three years later, the director returned with his 2006 release Golmaal: Fun Unlimited. Starring Ajay, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi, Tusshar Kapoor and Rimi Sen, Golmaal was received well by critics and declared a hit as well. Golmaal, thus, was the film that escalated Rohit to the path of success – so much so – that 13 years after its release, Rohit is characterized by the film – three sequels to which have already released so far. Starring Ajay Devgn in the lead role, Singham earned Rs 100.30 crore was received well by critics. Singham was followed by Bol Bachchan with Abhishek Bachchan, Ajay and Asin playing the lead roles. [caption id="attachment_229149" align="aligncenter" width="647"] Ajay Devgn in a still from Singham[/caption] But 2013’s Chennai Express, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles was another major milestone in Rohit’s career as it set several box office records. After its release, Chennai Express became the highest-grossing Bollywood film in India and abroad. It is reported to be the eleventh -highest-grossing Bollywood film worldwide. [caption id="attachment_229145" align="aligncenter" width="647"] Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan in a still from Chennai Express[/caption] Singham Returns, a sequel to the 2011 film, released in 2014 and was equally successful as the first part – it earned Rs 140.62 crore at the box office. Dilwale was a hit as well – especially because it reunited SRK and Kajol after 2010’s My Name Is Khan and Gerua continues to be a memorable track. The film earned Rs 148.72 crore. [caption id="attachment_229146" align="aligncenter" width="647"] Kajol and SRK in a still from Dilwale[/caption] After Dilwale, Rohit returned to work with Golmaal Again in 2017 – only to witness another blockbuster with the film earning Rs 205.69 crore. He kept himself busy after the release of Golmaal Again to concentrate on Ranveer Singh’s Simmba and boy, it was worth it! Simmba was nothing short of phenomenal and not only impressed critics but also proved to be a turning point in Ranveer’s career. Simmba’s earning stand at Rs 240.31 crore. Rohit Shetty also co-produced some of his films including Singham Returns, Dilwale and Simmba. Sooryavanshi is his upcoming release with Akshay Kumar playing the lead role. It will release in 2020.
