Adios, Chintu Ji! Battling cancer bravely, a lookback at 'heartthrob' Rishi Kapoor’s journey against the illness

The death of Rishi Kapoor, one of Bollywood's greatest cine icons, took everyone by shock on Thursday morning. Rishi was hospitalised on Wednesday morning after complaining that he was not feeling well. The 67-year-old actor was admitted to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai. Wife Neetu Kapoor was at his side.

Today, as we fondly remember the superstar, here's a look back at how he put forth a strong battle against the illness:

In September 2018, Rishi tweeted that he is leaving for the USA to seek medical treatment. "Hello, all! I am taking a short leave of absence from work to go to America for some medical treatment. I urge my well-wishers not to worry or unnecessarily speculate. It’s been 45 years “plus” of wear and tear at the movies. With your love and good wishes, I will be back soon!", he wrote, albeit he not revealed that time that he was diagnosed with cancer.

As soon as he reached New York, he was seen hanging out with his dear friend from fraternity Anupam Kher. "Kher-free” or is it “Care-free”on Madison Avenue with colleague and old friend Anupam Kher this afternoon!"tweeted Rishi after meeting him in NYC.

As he underwent treatment for cancer, several celebs including Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonali Bendre, Vicky Kaushal, Rajkummar Rao, Malaika Arora and Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra among others visited the ailing actor. 

While Rishi was often visited by son Ranbir Kapoor and daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahani, Ranbir’s girlfriend Alia Bhatt too joined him at several occasions. The couple even celebrated the New Year eve with the veteran actor.

After seeking the treatment for 11 months and 11 days, Rishi returned to his homeland. He took to Twitter and thanked his fans for wishing him a speedy recovery.

Post return to India, his health has frequently been in focus. The actor was admitted to hospital in quick succession in February. Amid speculations about his health, he had been hospitalised in New Delhi in early February, while on a visit to New Delhi.

Rishi was hospitalised on Wednesday morning again to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai. Wife Neetu Kapoor was at his side. He was suffering from cancer-related complications. By 3 am on Thursday, Rishi had stopped responding to the ventilator. The end came at 8:45 am this morning.
