In Pictures: Remembering Bollywood's favourite comedian 'Soorma Bhopali' Jagdeep

Bollywood, on July 8, lost yet another talented personality-Jagdeep. Aged 81, the veteran comedian breathed his last owing to age-related health issues. Born as Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey on March 29, 1939, he was better known as his stage name Jagdeep. His career in the films started as a child artist extra in B.R. Chopra's Afsana. In his illustrious career spanning over decades, the comedian immortalised the character of Soorma Bhopali in Sholay. Owing to the massive popularity of the character, he went on to direct a film of the same  name. Apart from this, he featured in Ab Dilli Door Nahin, K. A. Abbas's Munna, Guru Dutt's Aar Paar and Bimal Roy's Do Bigha Zamin among several others. However, after AVM Productions' Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke, he received numerous accolades for his work. It is also said that Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was impressed with his performance in Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke and gifted his personal staff.

With over 400 films to his merit, Jagdeep established himself as Bollywood's best comedian. On the personal front, he was the father of actor Jaaved Jaafery, television producer-director Naved Jafri and a daughter named Muskaan Jafri. His grandson Meezaan recently made his Bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali-produced Malaal

Today, as we fondly remember Jagdeep and his legacy in Bollywood over the years, let's take a look at some of his unseen and priceless pictures.
