13 Years Of Rock On!!: Of friendship, music and passion, here's how Abhishek Kapoor & Farhan Akhtar's film broke the rules of a conventional Bollywood film

Every once in a while, there comes a film which not just touches our lives but, also changes a lot of things around us. The 2008 Abhishek Kapoor directorial Rock On!! is one such film that has over the years gained a cult status. Even after 13 years of its release the film still rages in the hearts of both cine-goers and ardent cinephiles.

The film tells the story of four friends who come together to rekindle their friendship, and how music acts as the binding force between them. Abhishek presented a tale of friendship sewn with the laces of timeless music. As much as the music plays an integral part in the film, it also connects on a molecular level with the audience. Rock On!! is a sweet concoction of many firsts, it gave us a new narrative style by the maestro Abhishek Kapoor that broke the rules of a conventional Bollywood film, it was Farhan Akhtar’s debut as an actor, and a fresh sound from the laboratory of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Be it the existential, Pichle Saat Dinon Mein, the curious case of, Socha Hai, the slow burn of, Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein, the live wire of its title track or even the cathartic venom of, Zehreelay, each song of the film stands apart and has a certain mystic charm to it.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy experimented with a lot of sounds from soft rock, pop - rock to trash metal blended with vivid poetry by Mr Javed Akhtar to evoke a myriad of emotions. Rock On!! has a tremendous depth in its soundtrack and it still feels fresh to this day and age. It tells us the importance of the most basic things like friendship. It’s Abhishek Kapoor’s vision that made the film and its music what they are today. He didn’t let his choices be defined by the modus operandi of box - office. Instead, he sketched a clutter-breaking roadmap that eventually made the film and its soundtrack an important chapter in the book of Bollywood.
